Hello artists, and welcome back to another artist feature. This week, we are featuring Yukta Ramanan! Yukta Ramanan is an incoming high school senior hailing from Northern Virginia. Apart from uploading music on her Youtube Channel (go subscribe!), Yukta serves as a Director for organizations like Youth for Ethical Sourcing and The Greater Good Initiative, where she works to further her passions for global health, sustainability, economics, equity, and policy writing. In her free time, you can find her exploring the city or drinking copious amounts of bubble tea. Let's get on to the interview with Yukta!
1. How did you first get into music, art, and spoken word?
I was introduced to music by my mother who is an incredible singer. Music has always been imbued in my life and I never felt that it was formally brought in - it has just always been there.
2. Who or what are your biggest inspirations that motivate you to write music?
My biggest inspiration is honestly just my life and the people in it. However, my equity work has also led me to recognize the intersectionality between my own life and the experiences of others, and a lot of my songs are about current affairs.
3. How do you plan on using your music to spread awareness or make a difference in the world?
I think music is truly a catalyst of change and growth. I interweave themes of social justice and activism into my original song lyrics so listeners are able to listen to music with strong messages. While I am a sucker for cheesy music, it is really refreshing to be able to center my own music around themes that I am passionate about. My voice is my guide and if my songs about racial equity or mental health reach people, I am emboldened to continue.
4. What is your favorite piece of music that you have written so far?
My favorite piece is titled the American Dream, and it is an original song about the Black Lives Matter movement and the marginalization of communities.
5. What are your current or future goals with your music?
I don’t have any set goals, other than to continue writing and releasing music. My hope is to connect with more incredible listeners and to (hopefully!) be signed to a label one day. My goal is also just to continue improving my abilities and learning from others.
6. If you had the opportunity to spend a day with your favorite musician, who would it be and why?
This is a really difficult one because I admire so many artists. If I had to pick one, I would say the Weeknd. I’ve always admired his songs and his ability to seamlessly traverse musical genres.
7. Do you have any advice or tips for people that are interested in music and art?
My best piece of advice is to start getting involved in any capacity. Music is beautiful because it embraces people’s unique identities and interests. Whether you want to write and perform songs, play in an orchestra, produce music, or simply listen, there’s a space for everyone!
